Perp Profiles

As of early 2004, there were roughly 140 "possible suspects" in the JBR case (Shapiro 2001). As of August 2006, Boulder DA Mary Lacy asserted "I’m guessing between the BPD and our office, we’ve probably looked seriously at 200 people...." "Seriously. At 200 people. Uhm and done investigation into those 200 people. That’s not saying that we’ve done buccal swabs on all of them. We haven’t. There are DNA samples taken on a lot of different suspects." Internet poster oneeyedJack has reported that "Dr. Robert Keppel, who worked the Green River Killer case, brought a lot to the table in that case because of the way he dealt with the voluminous files. He became a consultant on dealing with these huge cases in later years, and he said that in over 90% of cases, the name of the offender was in the police files within the first month or so." Thus, it's far more likely than not that the killer is someone already identified by police, but not all the 140 "possible suspects" alluded to above are necessarily known to the public.

  • 14-Year Old Dancer. "Nine months after the slaying of JonBenet Ramsey, a girl who attended the same dance studio as the young beauty queen and lived just two miles away was assaulted in her bed by an intruder while her mother slept nearby." Possible similarities to the JBR killing include:
  1. Girl performed at same dance studio as JBR took lessons: Dance West.
  2. She had performed in several public functions in Boulder in the year before her death.
  3. Girl lived 2 miles from Ramseys and the assault occurred only 9 months after JBR died.
  4. The family was out of the house from late afternoon on the eve of the crime, until after dark.
  5. The intruder may have waited at least four hours before entering the girl's second-floor bedroom,
  6. Perp found girl in bed and assaulted her in the house while mother was sleeping.
  7. Girl was sexually assaulted by penetration of finger or object and orally.

Stranger intruder theories posit someone completely unknown to or by the family. These include:

Acquaintance intruder theories posit someone loosely connected to the family who selected the Ramseys for a particular motivation, e.g., revenge or targeting JBR because she'd been seen in a beauty pageant. None of these individuals would have been invited into the house on Christmas night. These include:

"Friendly" intruder theories involve someone well-known to the family and JBR herself, someone who may have even gained access to the house on the night of December 26 on "friendly" terms; but it also includes adults who were Ramsey workers, friends or close acquaintances of John or Patsy Ramsey (or even children of such friends) but who might have had an exploitative rather than friendly relationship with JBR.
