Status of Investigation

How Much Has Boulder Spent on the Case?

  • Expenses 2002-2006. It has been reported that BDA has spent slightly over $40,000 on the JBR case from 2002 through early September 2006.
  • It has been reported in October 2006 that "Lacy said she was retaining the services of investigator Mark Spray — at a rate of $5,000 a month — to continue following leads on the JonBenet Ramsey case through the end of the year. Spray was at the center of the Karr investigation."

How Much Evidence is There?

  • CNN (2001). As of 2001, according to Larry King Live, the Boulder police report having a) interviewed more than 600 people in this case; investigated about 140 potential suspects; c) logged about 1400 items of evidence; and d) built a file approximately 40,000 pages long.
  • Steve Thomas (2000). "Police interviewed 590 people, consulted 64 outside experts, investigated and cleared more than 100 possible suspects, collected 1,058 pieces of evidence, tested over 500 items at federal, state, and private laboratories, gathered handwriting and non-testimonial evidence from 215 people, reviewed more than 3,400 letters and 700 telephone tips. They contacted 17 states and two foreign countries, amassing a case file of over 30,000 pages..." (Thomas 2000: 297).
  • Alex Hunter. In a December 2006 interview, Hunter stated: "there's more evidence in this case than any I've ever prosecuted in 29 years"
  • Coverage by The Daily Camera of the investigation is here.

Is There Any Evidence Not Yet Publicized?

  • Mary Lacy Statement. At the press conference to announce the release of John Mark Karr as a suspect in the JBR case, Boulder DA Mary Lacy stated: "as far as we can tell, there is no physical evidence in this case that it…has not been in the public domain. The ability of our office, or any law enforcement to connect this crime to a person based on something they know about it, that no-one knows was gone a long time ago. That’s impossible."
  • Michael Kane Statement. In a 2001 interview with grand jury specialist Michael Kane, who led the 13-month grand jury probe, it has been reported "There remain 'dozens' of secrets, he said. 'Absolutely. Dozens. And a lot of what the public thinks is fact is simply not fact.'"
  • Linda Arndt Statement. Linda Arndt, the police officer on the scene when JBR's body was found, claimed  in June, 2006 that "90 percent of the case details have not been disclosed accurately."
  • Jameson Statement. Internet poster Jameson also claims that Mary Lacy is mistaken and that several areas have "lots of mysteries."
  • Redacted Material from Search Warrants. The Boulder search warrants include redacted material on:
  1. page 2 (roughly 1 sentence redacted in a paragraph about where the body was found) of the September 29 warrant executed in Boulder;
  2. page 11 (it appears to be 2 paragraphs) of the March 1997 warrant executed in Charlevoix;
  3. page 12 (it appears to be 1 sentence and possibly 2 paragraphs) of the March 1997 Charlovoix warrant
  4. page 13 (it appears to be 1 sentence and 1 paragraph) of the March 1997 Charlovoix warrant
  5. page 14 (1 paragraph) of the March 1997 Charlovoix warrant
  6. page 15 (it appears to be 1 or 2 sentences) of the March 1997 Charlovoix warrant
  7. A news account about the release of the March Charlevoix warrant stated: "The few items deleted from the warrant include information that could violate the privacy of the Ramseys or third parties, or set back the 11-month unsolved murder investigation. Following one blacked-out section, is a paragraph in which John and Patsy Ramsey told police they heard no odd noises the night of the murder. It notes that Patsy asked a detective "Why didn't I hear my baby?" when police showed up to investigate a possible kidnapping. Some published reports have indicated a neighbor heard a scream coming from the Ramsey home Christmas night."
